ARTICLE - Annual Landscape Maintenance Calendar

January

  • Clean all beds thoroughly and pull leaves out of shrubs
  • Limb up any ornamental trees/ shrubs
  • Mow grass height down by 1/4-1/2 inch
  • Prune crepe myrtles and ornamental grasses
  • Deadhead all annuals
  • Weed control to all turf areas with root development fertilizer
  • Spray horticultural oil on all evergreens to kill dormant funguses and insect eggs
  • Fertilize perennials and flowering shrubs

 

February

  • Clean all beds thoroughly and pull leaves out of shrubs
  • Prune roses and butterfly bushes
  • Apply systemic insecticides in all trees and shrubs ornamental
  • Cut back liriope and all other winter perennials
  • Mow grass height down by 1/4-1/2 inch
  • Enhance bed lines if needed
  • Deadhead all annuals

 

March

  • Clean all beds thoroughly
  • Continue lowering height of Bermuda gradually until you reach a height of 1 inch
  • Fertilize all ornamental trees and shrubs and perennials
  • Apply 2nd application of premergent with high nitrogen based fertilizer to prevent weeds and promote growth
  • Start cutting Fescue every 2 weeks

 

April

  • Clean all beds thoroughly
  • Keep mowing Bermuda at 1 inch and start mowing every week
  • Start mowing Fescue every week at 2.5-3" inch
  • Turn on irrigation system after April 15th and check for leaks/ adjust times/adjust all
  • sprinkler heads
  • Trim all ornamental evergreen trees
  • Aerate Bermuda and other warm season grasses

 

May

  • Clean all beds thoroughly
  • Keep mowing Bermuda at 1"-1.5" inch every week
  • Fescue at 3 inches every week
  • Pruning shrubs (natural prune) and shaping training roses and other climbers
  • Edge beds on a weekly basis
  • Deadhead perennials
  • Fertilize warm season turf

 

June

  • Clean all beds thoroughly
  • Raise mower decks up 1/4 inch for warm season turf 1/2 inch for cool season turf
  • Prune all shrubs (Natural prune) and shaping training roses and other climbers
  • Deadhead annuals and perennials, roses etc....
  • Look for insects and fungus on turf, trees, and shrubs (aphids)
  • Fertilize all perennials and annuals and other flowering shrubs
  • Prune azaleas (all pruned shrubs need to be watered well within 24 hours)
  • Spray fungicide as needed
  • Inspect all trees and shrubs

 

July

  • Raise mower decks up 1/4 inch for warm season turf 1/2 inch for cool season turf
  • Edge beds on a weekly basis
  • Mow cool season turf every 2 to 3 weeks at 4 inches
  • Adjust sprinkler settings as required
  • Deadhead all perennials and annuals as needed
  • Look for insects and fungus on turf, trees, and shrubs (aphids)
  • Fertilize warm season grasses and cool season grasses
  • Apply high phosphorous fertilizer to crepe myrtles and all other flowering shrubs

 

August

  • Mow every week depending on weather conditions
  • Edge beds on a weekly basis and enhance all bed lines
  • Prune shrubs if needed (water shrubs within 24 hours after pruning)
  • Clean up crepe myrtles
  • Deadhead perennials and annuals roses
  • Fertilize warm season grass/ spray out all weeds in cool season grass to prep for aerate
  • overseed

 

September

  • Warm season grass should be at 1-2 inches
  • Fescue can be brought down to 3 inches
  • Aerate and overseed all Fescue areas
  • Prune all shrubs
  • Cut back hydrangeas towards end of month
  • Check for aphids and white flies on shrubs and perennials

 

October

  • Leaf removal starts/blow out all beds
  • Fertilize trees and shrubs
  • Pre emerge turf areas (warm season only) fertilize fescue or lime if needed

 

November

  • Leaf removal
  • Edge beds twice a month
  • Fertilize cool season grasses

 

December

  • Leaf removal
  • Lime all grass areas (per soil test)
